Bombogenesis - snowshoes required

A Nor'easter "Bomb Cyclone" came passing through on Saturday - news media went nuts with the word "Bombogenesis" pervading the newscasts. It was bad--but somehow I remember things much worse when I was growing up in upstate NY.

Nevertheless we got over a foot of snow and I took to the trails in the backyard on snowshoes late morning...

a.k.a Greg's Gap #2  :-)

Sniffing out the other Dayton Road Quarries

I went back to Dayton Road today for a quick hike and exploration of additional quarries. They are so easy to see in the winter!
Quarry A
Quarry B
Remnants of the old carriage road?
Methinks this is probably a "prospect" and not a actual quarry

Revisiting the Felspar Quarries

I am writing an article for the local regional newspaper on the history of the feldspar quarries and mills in the area so I thought I'd get some better photos in the winter when there isn't any foliage to obscure things.

It was a cold day and--as I remember--a really steep slope to get to the nearby quarries from Raymond Road but I wore my crampons and had no problem!

that's some of the quarry rock dump

see the drill marks for the dynamite?
the carriage road continues north
it was made from rocks blasted from the quarries

It was cold but nevertheless, I couldn't resist taking a couple of "sunshine" shots

Another abandoned quarry nearby...
The pipeline trail - see my Prius way in the distance?

Rock Samples

I picked up a few rocks on the carriage road. Note the two on the left are typical feldspar containing shiny mica and bits of quartz, the rock on the right is solid quartz.

A light snow...

Our backyard after this morning's snow - trails are looking good!

Early afternoon I took a hike in the woods north of Howe - it was beautiful!

Back to explore (north of Howe)

It was a bit warmer today so I headed out once more for a hike. There are a myriad of barely used trails in this parcel of land - at one time probably dirt bikers created them as many are just "trenches"... Needless to say, its intriguing and interesting to explore and attempt to map!

More like a luge run!
The afternoon sunshine always is nice in the woods....
Here was my trek...
...and here's a map of just a few of the trails in this area!

Cold but sunny hike (just north of Howe)

I took a short hike on the land parcel just north of Howe Street. It was really cold, but what the heck - at least the sun was shining!

From whence I came....
(It was a slippery downhill)
To whence I will proceed...
Sun on the snow...
The area is riddled with ancient ATV trails (or should I say trenches?!). Trail #3 was actually just a trench remnant littered with fallen trees and branches.
Note:
The green dashed arrow indicates what I believe is the main trail back to Howe....

Observations in the snow

I took a hike in the snow off Keeney - its lookin' nice...
The entrance
Yeah - a skier has been here!
Down by the stream
Can you see the benched trail (barely!)
Late afternoon sun
Yeah - a snowshoer has been thru
At the ridge trail summit
Another late afternoon sun photo

Bummer - huge ATV  (Or maybe an off-road jeep) came from Howe St :-)
Methinks deer slept here last night....
